- “Saptapadi”, the play penned by the famous playwright, Ujjwal Chattopadhyay is a tribute to the legendary actor, Uttam Kumar on his birth anniversary. Mr. Chattopadhyay got his inspiration from the novel “Saptapadi” written by Tarashankar Bandyopadhyay and from the film directed by Ajoy Kar.
The story takes places in Second World War era where Krishnendu Mukherjee, a young medical college student falls in love with his fellow medical aspirant, an attractive Anglo Indian Christian woman named Rina Brown. They became close after a play on Othello but couldn’t marry each other due to their differences in religions and the aversion from Krishnendu’s father. - Years later, fate make them meet again in a military hospital. This wonderful play revisits the evergreen emotion of the 1961 romantic film, as the playwriter adapted texts like Shakespeare’s ‘Macbeth’, Chekov’s ‘Three Sisters’, and Tagore’s ‘Notir Puja’, ‘Bidushak’ among others.
