Hendrik Höfgen wants to be a famous actor in Germany.He nurtures a deep desire to be reputable in the capital Berlin, the center of German theatre. When Hitler and the Nazis came to power Hendrik moves to Berlin leaving his Communist past and friends…He got instant success playing the character of Mephisto.
Hendrik starts rubbing his shoulders with the highest Nazi officials. He was conferred with the topmost position of German National Theatre and reaches the pinnacle of fame. But,how? At what expense?
