• Harilal Gandhi, the eldest among the four sons of Mahatma Gandhi, is the tragic protagonist of the play.
• The tussle between the father and son, was the most poignant and pathetic stories of their lives. Harilal, as a young lad, burdened with widely acclaimed morals of a strict disciplinarian father, who could lead the world, but was unable to understand his own child.
• The private life of Mahatma Gandhi was over shadowed by his larger than life political career.His family, particularly his children’s lives are hitherto shrouded in mystery and darkness. Gandhi ji, who was well aware of Harilal’s inadequacy, prevents his son from following his heart’s desire and sponsor someone else’s name, citing moral grounds.
• This episode create life long rift between father and the son. Hari loses heart and doubts his father’s love and intention. He leaves South Africa and heads to India with a zeal to educate himself and be financially independent. However, he was not educated enough to find a job, and his business ideas were not as brilliant as he had believed them to be.
• After the death of Gulab Gandhi ( Hari’s wife), Harilal was totally lost and this leads to a beggar’s life in future. He changes his religion twice, as a protest against his father’s behaviour. Gandhi, who was busy attending meetings and conferences, where the fate of forty crore Indians was to be decided, would often find in a newspaper screaming,” Police arrested drunk Harilal for creating a scene in the road “. And sometimes Harilal himself from the dias of the fundamentalist Muslim organizations meeting- ” I shall continue fighting till Ba (Kasturba Gandhi) and Gandhi embrace Islam”.
• This play tries to make an ardent effort to understand yet another enigmatic facet of human life.
